Chris de Vries has been head winemaker for Vilafonté Series M and Series C since joining the team in 2014. A Stellenbosch University alumnus with a Master’s Degree in Oenology, Chris nurtured his passion for winegrowing during cellar and vineyard stints as an intern at Vilafonté and at Opus One in Napa Valley, California under the great Michael Silacci. Chris brings a meticulous approach to vineyard management and blending. “My approach to winegrowing bridges the science of the land with the intuition of the heart,” he reflects. Under Chris’s stewardship, Vilafonté has been globally celebrated, including the honour of receiving the 2021 and 2024 IWSC Red Wine Producer of the Year trophy in London.

Arlene Mains

Winemaker for Seriously Old Dirt

Arlene Mains, Head Winemaker for Seriously Old Dirt by Vilafonté, is a Stellenbosch local with a Master’s Degree in Wine Biotechnology from Stellenbosch University. Her passion for winemaking was sparked during a pivotal lecture, and has since led her to fulfill roles at prestigious wineries like Opus One, in Napa Valley, California, Mouton Rothschild in Bordeaux and Rupert & Rothschild. Joining Vilafonté in 2021 as head winemaker, Arlene brings a curious and energetic approach to exploring the ancient soils of the Western Cape. Her passion lies in transforming pure fruit expression into something extraordinary, always honouring its origins. “It’s all about the dirt and untapped potential waiting to be discovered,” she reflects, shaping Seriously Old Dirt’s compelling identity.

Edward Pietersen

Head Winegrower

Edward Pietersen, head winegrower at Vilafonté since 2006, has dedicated over 22 vintages to nurturing the estate’s vineyards, cultivating a profound connection to the land. Beginning his career as a farm worker, Edward has gained invaluable knowledge of the intricate relationship between soil, vine, and climate. At Vilafonté, Edward oversees 43 hectares, with 18 under vine, tending to each plant with precision and care. “Every vine is like a child,” he observes, “and each one tells its own story.” Committed to sustainable viticulture, Edward employs innovative practices, including the DIRT irrigation system, leaf water potential management, and a focus on enhancing soil health. His considered approach ensures the vineyards thrive, forming the bedrock for Vilafonté wines.

AJ Nel

General Manager

AJ Nel, General Manager at Vilafonté, brings valued international experience and a clear strategic focus to his role. Joining the team in 2025, AJ oversees operations with an emphasis on growth and efficiency. His 6 years selling Vilafonté as Sales Manager at East Meets West Fine Wines in Shanghai added to his understanding of diverse markets and portfolios. Known for his steady leadership and collaborative approach, AJ plays a key role in guiding Vilafonté’s continued growth and ensuring its presence in some of the world’s most esteemed wine markets.
