Reflecting the particular nature of the 2012 vintage, Series C offers immediate lifted and early complex aromatics of spice, blueberry, black raspberry and lilac. For a young C, it is a particularly inviting wine, with a silky, sensuous entry, and soft but substantive tannins for its structure. Notes of chocolate creams add to this inviting palate, yet it has a long, firm finish of fruit, graphite and slate. This 2012 vintage of Series C is both concentrated and friendly, characteristics that will support a gracious aging of 20 years.
The Series C 2011 is one of the most concentrated wines Vilafonté has grown, with a deep black colour & an expressive nose; leading with currants, crème de cassis, liquorice and graphite. This vintage has equal parts preserved black fruits and minerals, & beautiful espresso roast and mocha from well-integrated oak. The wine has weight and power, yet with a majestic richness, great fruit purity and incredible elegance. The Series C 2011 will reward both as a young wine and in the future, as it matures in cellar.
Series C displays as black with opaque purple shades. This is a very expressive wine; it offers aromas of preserved blackberries and currants. Intense fruit concentration and fruit sweetness layers the wine. Hints of liquorice and graphite contribute to this massively opulent wine. The oak is very well integrated with notes of dark chocolate and espresso roast. The wine has a beautiful approach with a firm tannin structure; a big and broad mid-plate and a very silky exit.
The ‘Series C style’ is that of a firm, powerful and concentrated wine, rich in fruit at release and blended for long ageing. Cabernet Sauvignon for this blend comes from our most potent vineyard parcels; its Merlot component gives it a velvety texture, and Cabernet Franc contributes hints of violet flowers, and elegance. At release, it exudes aromas of blackcurrants, blackberries and liquorice. Its secondary characters suggest a mineral presence of graphite and crushed rock, integrated with French oak. On entry, the palate shows very fine grained tannins, significant fruit weight and intensity, and great length. Series C 2009 can be held for three to five years for integration and flavour complexity. Savour for the next fifteen years.
Pre-release tasting shows deep red-black colour, abundant, layered primary fruit and secondary savory aromas, black currants, Morello cherry preserve, cocoa powder and balsamic. On the palate entry the wine is soft with fruit sweetness. In the mid palate it broadens to reveal flavour intensity and the traditional Series C structure. The Vilafonté C is marked by soft polished tannins, well-integrated oak and an elongated finish.
Our Cabernets typically show bright flavours, black fruit and excellent acidity at harvest; never requiring acid additions to the fermentations and this vintage was typical. With 24 months in French oak barrels and 12 months in the bottle, as of July 2010 Series C has gained great aromatic intensity and complexity. The nose “jumps out” with opulent aromas of black currant, dark cherry, licorice, chocolate, leather and fantastic well-integrated oak. Due to the amount of Cabernet Sauvignon (74%), this wine displays a solid structured frame, which compliments the wines fruit while lending to the incredible concentration and length. A “big wine”, Series C will be enhanced by decanting before serving, and will reward years of cellaring with increased complexity.
Stylistically the C is showing silky tannins and upfront fruit. It is deep and concentrated with multiple layers of dark chocolate, espresso bean, blackberry and dark cherry flavors. On the entry the structure is elegant, with a focused and concentrated mid palate that gradually builds to a long, supple, yet focused finish. Deep, dark oak flavors integrate with primary and secondary fruit flavors to deliver a harmonious, balanced wine with great aging potential.
C’s aromatics are deeply wound; some time in the glass shows sweet and sensuous black fruit in the nose; very expressive, with French oak underlying the fruit rather than dominating it. The wine is very young aromatically, exhibiting intense fruit; and, typically, 1-2 years from release the wine will start revealing its inherent complexity. Stylistically the C is reminiscent of the 2003 vintage, and shows a significant level of ripe tannin, which is silkier in texture than the 2003 vintage was initially. Flavours of chocolate, almost a sense of liquid blackberries, come in the mid and end of the palate, balanced against some firm tannins, then a long finish of fruit. Series C will fit well now with intense flavoured red meat and game; yet will reward hugely a cellaring period of 1-2 years, show additional development over 8 years, then likely hold for another 10 years.
A lighter vintage overall. Lifted aromas of jasmine flowers and leather with caramel notes on the palate.
The wines’ aromatics are intense and deep, needing time in the glass, and some air, to surface. Black fruit…cassis, blackberry…some dark flavors…pepper, chocolate…and warm tones of oak begin to present themselves. Deep black fruit and complexity are hallmarks of this wine. Given the intensity, palate entry is surprisingly silky and elegant, building to strong weight and flavor concentration in the mid palate, big ripe and chewy tannins, sweet black fruit intensity, finishing with strength and duration of dark earthy flavors that gradually melt away. Overall, Series C is a refined and concentrated wine, with strong fruit weight and rich tannins. Tightly structured, it invites and satisfies; giving extended pleasure over time in the glass. Ageing potential? Given the balance and concentration of this wine it should develop over ten years and easily hold for another ten.
